Steve Spencer

Hey, I’m Steve! I’m a sexual health advocate-cum-Masters student-cum-trouble maker and I’m excited to be involved in PrEPaccessNOW because I firmly believe easy access to PrEP should be a right and that it is a valuable tool in reaching the eventual goal of zero new HIV transmissions. I believe sex positivity is the greatest tool we have as gay men to improve our community’s health and wellbeing, so I promote sex positivity wherever I can, - even if this means getting in trouble for nudity! I also run a community health and wellbeing blog, ‘Mothersuperior.info’ and regularly write on issues that are important for gay men. Thanks for supporting us!

My PrEP journey began as a way for me to eliminate the fear, anxiety and guilt I had felt every time I would see my doctor for sexual health screening. The self-fulfilling guilt I would put on myself for the times I was not using condoms was a heavy burden I had not realised was weighing on me all these years. Beginning PrEP was the best thing I could do for my own health, as it has allowed me to shed all of these negative feelings of my HIV risk and the surprising result of this has been the empowerment I feel in being able to take responsibility for my own sexual health. I strongly believe PrEP is a game changer in reducing HIV transmissions and that all individuals should have the right to affordable and accessible options in accessing PrEP. I believe that through awareness, education and easy access, achieving zero new HIV transmissions is within reach for our generation.

I originally started using PrEP because I was increasingly having bareback sex and then beating myself up over it. Knowing I am protected by PrEP allows me to live my life free of worry about HIV and also eliminates concern about partners’ HIV status. Everybody is now equal and my safety  & protection rests solely in my hands. I also have more regular medical check ups & feel I am being very responsible about my continued good health. I have been wanting to do something about making PrEP more accessible in Australia for some time now so it has been a tremendous thrill to be a part of PrEPaccessNOW.
